HERTFORD COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOLS JOB DESCRIPTION

 

JOB TITLE:  SCHOOL NURSE

 

Reports to:  Student Services Director

Supervises:  No one

Term of Employment:  10 months

FLSA:  Exempt if Salary  FLSA minimum; Non-exempt if salary  FLSA minimum

 

Qualifications:

  • Possession of a valid TB test and health examination issued by the local County Board of Health or recognized medical authority
  • Education/formal training/licensure/certification/experience:
    • BSN with current North Carolina RN license minimum of five years nursing experience
    • Certification as a School Health Nurse is required within three (3)years of employment
    • Current NC driver’s license
  • Additional Skills:
    • Effective communicator with a wide range of age groups, and ethnic, educational, and socio-economic backgrounds
    • Strong physical assessment skills

 

Essential Job Functions:

  1. Uses the nursing process to assess, plan, and evaluate the health care of individual students as well as groups of students in schools
    • Identifies children with special health care needs and develops health care plans and emergency action plans
    • Monitors kindergarten health assessment and immunization records and facilitates completion
    • Participates in coordinated school health teams as appropriate
  2. Provides nursing care to school-age children, adolescents, and school staff in the system by:
    • Organizing/completing periodic health screenings assuring follow-up, providing care, and referring services
    • Implementing an effective medication administration system
    • Supervising/assisting with prescribed treatments/procedures
    • Providing emergency care for illness/injury
    • Providing care for children with chronic illness
  3. Uses equipment/supplies correctly
  4. Assures the use of appropriate safety and infection control measures
    • Assures compliance with communicable disease standards
    • Monitors the school environment for health and safety issues
  5. Teaches/directs/advises/informs others
    • Development of workshops/training activities for school personnel on health-related topics
    • Provision of individual explanation(s) to students, parents, and appropriate staff regarding prevention, illness, treatment, etc.
    • Creates communications and communication processes for the programs
    • Informing family/school staff of community resources
    • Supervising school personnel and volunteers assisting with the school health programs
  6. Reports/records data
    • Documents patient data, plan of care, care rendered and response to care for individual students
    • Reports significant data regarding student health status to appropriate individuals
    • Provides program reports promptly
    • Appropriately reports health and safety issues in the school environment
  7. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor

The major physical and cognitive requirements listed below apply to this job classification within Hertford County Schools. Work in this classification is considered light physical work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects.

 

Must be able to:
